TUTOR SPOTLIGHT: Liam Coughlan

Liam Coughlan is one of our friendly, multi-instrumental tutors, teaching bass, guitar, ukulele, and drums at our partner schools and Great South Road Music School.

He holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz from the University of Auckland, and has performed in a KBB award-winning band, and also writes and releases his own music. He has been with us for the past year and enjoys helping students build their skills and develop a genuine love for music.

Over the break, we caught up with Liam to find out about his musical inspirations and journey.

LEMS: LET’S START FROM THE BEGINNING!

LEMS: what got you into playing music and teaching?

LIAM: I grew up in Auckland and I've always loved music. Both my parents listened to a wide variety of genres, from rock to acid jazz, to ska, to reggae, to EDM to name a few. I started taking music seriously at 13 with the drums and it continued evolving from there. I now play bass, guitar, ukulele, keyboard and produce & release music.

LIAM: Roger Taylor, the drummer of Queen, put me on the path for drums and I'm still on the kit today. I was fortunate enough to know and be taught by very talented and kind music teachers at Lynfield College. This is where my knowledge of music theory evolved. By year 12, I was dead set on pursuing a Bachelor of Music at University. Seeing my teachers turn me into a confident and skilled drummer made me want to do the same and give back to students.

LEMS: How would you describe your teaching?

LIAM:  I would say my teaching style is friendly, but focused. I encourage my students to be a part of the lesson, letting them develop a natural passion for music.

LEMS: WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU'RE NOT TEACHING AT LEWIS EADY MUSIC SCHOOL?

LIAM: If it's creative, I do it. I go to a lot of concerts/gigs. I like to occasionally dance and take photos. In summer, I am a Surf Lifeguard at Piha Beach, which is a great way to help the community and be out in nature. I also run regularly to keep fit, but also enjoy eating and trying different foods.

LEMS: WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?

LEMS: Finish tHe sentence, “Music is..”

LIAM: Connecting and collaborating with musicians, to produce a catalogue of music that I am hugely proud of.

LIAM: Humanity
